Students from Murrumburrah High School met with some of Harden Shire’s more experienced residents, to discuss their feelings and memories regarding Australia’s involvement in war, over the last century. The interviews held on Friday June 12 were designed to keep an audio recording for use in Harden Murrumburrah’s Museum and for The Australian War Memorial. The interviews started off slowly however it didn’t take long for the discussion to flow with some interesting experiences and memories recounted. Murrumburrah High School Head Teacher Adrienne Beck said “ Having the opportunity to interview members of the community about their memories of wartime and ANZAC Day gives the students incredible insight and personal understanding into these national experiences. Too often students are only taught from textbooks and from teachers, for whom these experiences are second hand. Our students were very lucky to have history brought to life for them in this vivid and personal way. “ Harden Shire Environmental Services Director, Sharon Langman along with Adrienne organsied the event and were assisted by The Twin Town Times who provided the interviewing recorders for the day. Jan Spokes told of being a young girl at school when planes flew overhead and trains tooted their horns in celebration when WWll ended. She said “Clothes were hand made and underpants were sewn from parachute cloth due to rationing, that went on after the war.” Jan said many people had friends or relatives who did not come home. “We also had bigger families with Dad one of fifteen kids and I was one of ten.”
