The Times would like to thank the Deputy Prime Minister, Michael McCormack for his support of the Twin Town Times and his willingness to provide the Harden-Murrumburrah community with media releases from his office to keep our readers informed.
The well-known Christmas carol, ‘The Little Drummer Boy’, evokes many visuals and stirring images. A boy of little wealth, who has nothing to gift to the new-born King, Jesus Christ, at the first Christmas other than to play
his drum which, as the carol says, brought great joy to the infant and his parents.
Likewise, as we come together as family and friends this Christmas to celebrate, to eat and drink and laugh and cry about the year that’s been and what’s to come, we should take time to reflect and think of those who may not be in the same situation as we are and perhaps for whatever reason not able to experience the joy of Christmas.
There will be many this festive season who are away from their loved ones, working, serving in our defence forces and emergency services, those on the land feeding and watering stock as a result of the drought or fighting
bushfires which continue to burn across the nation. We pay tribute and recognise the sacrifices these people make to give up their precious time with their loved ones to protect, serve, work and keep us safe when we’re
enjoying being with our friends and family.
Whatever you choose to do to celebrate Christmas and the holiday period, whether it be paddling in Lake Forbes, catching up with mates under the verandahs in Lockhart, picking cherries in Young for the Christmas pav, going for a float past the world famous Wagga Wagga beach or checking out the silo art in the communities around West Wyalong, I implore everyone in the Riverina and Central West to drive to the conditions, be safe on our roads, takes plenty of breaks, protect themselves from the sun and heat and be water wise when playing in and around pools, rivers, creeks and dams.
As the last slither of Christmas ham is being consumed and while the highlights of the Sydney to Hobart are flashing across the TV and the champagne glasses are charged on New Year’s Eve I hope everyone in the
Riverina electorate can take the time to reflect on the year that was. Yes, it has been a tough one for many, especially those living and working on the land and in small business. Moreover, it has also been a rewarding
year for others and the many achievements it has delivered.
I’m grateful for the support shown to my family, staff and I in what was a busy but productive election year. I’m also glad as the re-elected Federal Member and Deputy Prime Minister to have been able to celebrate the many accomplishments of individuals, communities, volunteer groups and small businesses and witnessed the goodwill and kindness shown to others throughout the difficult times this year. I pay tribute, commend and thank
everyone for their untiring efforts.
As the end of the year draws nearer, Catherine, my family and I extend our best wishes to all for a Happy Christmas and a successful 2020. Again I encourage everyone to stay safe, make good choices and like the Little
Drummer Boy, remember, it isn’t about the gifts you don’t have to give, but about the love and friendship you can offer those around you, your family and friends at this special time of year.
