Last Friday, December 1, Murrumburrah Public School’s 1C held a Christmas Market which was a raging success.

The class’s teacher Jess Cain had the idea one afternoon to put together a Christmas Market with her class, all they had to think of was a worthy cause to raise money for.

Mrs Cain said, “The class found the Children’s Westmead Hospital Christmas toy appeal and thought that it was the perfect cause for their fundraising. After raising the money, we can go online and choose the toys we would like to donate to kids who will spend Christmas in the hospital.

All term Year 1 have been planning, designing and crafting items to sell at their own stalls.

Students had to choose what they were to sell and for how much. They had to learn all about money how to give the correct change and how to run their own mini shop.

Mrs Cain couldn’t be prouder of the responsibility, respect and empathy that 1C showed throughout the big day being shopkeepers.

“It was something that I had done at schools I’d been at previously. It’s my first year here so I thought we’d try it out and see how it went and everything went perfect,” she said.

“Everyone of the kids were feeling very much in the Christmas spirit and when I told them the idea they absolutely loved it, they never made it about them they were all so focused on kids who were without toys and families on Christmas.

“All the kids from the other classes came in and were so impressed and were loving it as well. The energy around the entire school seemed to go up and I’ve already talked to the principal about having everyone do it next year.

“The kids had it up on the website where they’re able to buy the toys for the kids to sort of add a personal touch to it. They raised enough money to buy 75 toys which is a massive achievement.

“All the parents have come up to me and said how great it is to have the kids thinking outside of themselves, how proud they were of themselves and their willingness to help others brought me to tears.”

Well done to Murrumburrah Public School’s 1C on assisting so many children this Christmas.
