Meryl Steele, who passed away in 2020.

Kai Steel will be partnering with family and friends this Saturday to complete his 400 kilometre journey by walking to Jugiong.

Kai reached his goal of 300 kilometres and and his monetary goal, so decided to go another 100 kilometres. The walk will total the final 38 kilometres on the Jugiong Back Road to reach the 400ks.

Kai said, “I wanted to include other people who want to do the walk with me on Saturday so we have set up a number of things to help along the way.”

The group will have toilet and drink breaks every 8 or 9 kilometres and Tim O’Keeffe will be bringing out his familiar Fearne’s bus to transport those who don’t want to walk the full distance or who can’t. Those participating will be able to jump aboard and get on and off as they need to.

Kai said, “People can wear purple and come along to support the cause. There will be certain stops to swap people in and out.

There’s 3 check points, the first at Eulie Road turnoff, Back Jugiong Road turn off will be the second, before the property Dunolly which will be the third. “They are all spaced about the same distance apart before we get to the motel.”

Kai will be holding a bbq at the Jugiong Motel for everyone involved.

He said, “The whole idea came about after a chat with Robert Scott. I improved my health and he was helping with that. He said, ‘You’re that healthy now you could walk to Jugiong’. I said, “I might just do that. Pancreatic Cancer came up on my Facebook the next day, I was already walking so I thought why not walk for a cause. I’m not sure how many will come on the day, I’m not worried about that, I’ve just catered for heaps of people. There is a lot of support coming in from Jugiong and from here.”

The forecast was for clouds but it has now changed to between 1-5 mill which may not eventuate. The team is just $800 short of $5,000 and Kai is hoping that the auctioning off of a 5kw solar system for a standard house will do well. There is a reserve so those bidding will have to be realistic. It has been donated by Photon Solar.

Kai’s mother Meryl was a midwife at Young hospital for 45 years and passed away from pancreatic cancer in 2020. He puts his passion down to her memory. Kai said, “It’s for anyone who has lost loved ones from cancer or pancreatic cancer. The more I learnt about it the survival rate is very low.”

Those wishing to start at Harden are asked to meet at Newson Park at 5:45am to commence the day. Remember there will be plenty of support and stops along the way and it’s for a great cause. For more information check out Kai’s Facebook pages. It is expected the walk will take most of the day with the finale being the bbq around 2:30pm onwards.

“On the day I ask Everybody to dress in Purple 💜 and we will meet at Newson Park up near the pool at 5:45am and will head off at 6am I’m estimating we hit Jugiong around 2pm

Kai’s fundraising page states, “I’m Moving It this September!

This September, I’m walking 300km wait no let’s now do 400 km for all the People who die from pancreatic cancer every year.

Pancreatic cancer is now the 3rd biggest cancer killer of Australians, and because early-stage pancreatic cancer rarely causes symptoms, the survival rates are devastating.

If you are diagnosed with pancreatic cancer tomorrow, there is only an 11.5% chance you’ll be alive in 5 years.

But research can change this. Your support will fund life-saving pancreatic cancer research and improve survival rates.

Please make a donation to support my challenge and help fund life-changing pancreatic cancer research.
