The Iconic Sir George is on the market with CBRE given the task of accepting expressions of interest for the Iconic 1845 Hotel.

Extensive renovations were undertaken by Kate Hufton and her mother Liz Prater in 2015. Since opening it has become a much loved establishment drawing thousands of people off the Hume Highway to the quiet and picturesque village of Jugiong. Alongside this, It has witnessed strong input from those in the district with many travellers happy to take a drive in the car with a return trip of 3 hours or more to see the Sir George.

The pub was built in 1845 and stayed in the same family for much of this time. It went from the Sheahans to the Holms when George Holm’s grandmother who was a Sheehan took it on decades ago.

The Hume Highway stopped going through Jugiong nearly 25 years ago but the double lane highway which bypasses the town, now provides many travellers with the ability to stop off and experience the Jugiong township and the hospitality provided by the locals.

In January 2016 Kate told the Times “We bought it on a bit of a whim after contacting the agent, we found ourselves with the pub, we are looking forward to changing a few things and opening near springtime.”

That whim turned into a passion which saw the building transformed into a dining Mecca and. A place for young families to take their children and enjoy lunch as they played on the large grassed areas.

Liz told the Times in December 2016, “The pub has been here so long that the people who stop by have a feeling of ownership. Its been a public building and a lot of great stories come out from passers by. We were pretty determined to strip it back to its bones and reveal its history again. Over the years a lot of it has been covered up.”

The group uncovered a 1920 stove and they have been able to reveal parts of the building including some of the handcrafted stone walls which haven’t been seen for up to 100 years.”

Building Manager Andy Banderwacht told the Times in December 2016, “Irish stonemasons were shaping the walls nearly 170 years ago, dragging heavy stone across paddocks to the site. There are carpentry marks in the cellar which date back to these men. “I could feel the force of the building. I had that moment when I stopped and realised I was doing exactly the same thing that these Irish guys were 170 years ago. It’s just amazing.”

The Sir George took to social media at 1:pm on Monday afternoon. The post states, “So……after months of deliberation, and many a sleepless night, the owners of the iconic @thesirgeorge have finally decided to offer the business up for sale. Since 2015, Kate and Liz have put their blood, sweat and tears into breathing new life into this ramshackle old pub. It’s been an amazing journey for both women, but both believe it’s time for someone else to weave their magic on this grand old dame. Nestled on the banks of the Murrumbidgee River, @thesirgeorge is a major drawcard for visitors from both near and far. And with its luxury accommodation, sweeping grounds, bespoke homewares, artisan bakery and a top notch restaurant to boot, it’s easy to see why people love soaking up the atmosphere of this historic hotel.
