Deganway breaks his maiden over 1400 metres at Tumut on Saturday.

5 year old gelding Deganway has broken his maiden with a .83 length win at Tumut on Saturday.

Racing in the colours of well-known horse, Norm’s Bridle, Deganway jumped from the outside barrier in the 1400 metre race and collected $5,850 dollars for the trip.

7 inidividuals make up the ownership of Deganway, with 4 Heywoods a part of the bay’s ownership.

Named after the home town of a Heywood ancestor in Wales, Deganway had enjoyed 5 previous starts with 4 at Wagga and one at Parkes.

His race unfolded in a similar fashion to that of many of Norm’s wins. He was last at the turn and rounded the whole field to claim the win.

Part owner Duke Heywood said, “He was like Norm in the run, well back and then rounded them up. Norm used to do that, it’s great to watch.”

Deganway back in shot, (last) after trailing the field outside of the camera’s view for the first 800 metres.

Deganway was so far back that he didn’t reappear in the camera’s view until he had already raced his first 800 metres. With 600 metres left to run he came into view and came around the outside of the field. At the 200 metre mark he was pushed on by Jockey Josh Richards to claim the win.

Deganway looks to have the ability to get out in distance and may make a nice mile horse.

200 metres from home and the widest runner, Deganway stretches out, taking the long way to the finish line.
