A Grass fire which broke out in Murrumburrah at 150pm this afternoon has been contained by emergency services. The Kemp family who live at the end of Lyons street on the Southern side of Murrumburrah were alerted to a fire which appears to have been started near the Murrimboola Creek.

Early reports state that a fault in the power lines near the creek resulted in the small grass fire starting. Helped by winds blowing from the West the fire quickly burnt up the hill towards the homestead.

The fire burnt to within 10 metres of Bill and Helen Kemp’s house and managed to burn most of the paddock in front of the house. Harden Fire and Rescue, Demondrille and Cunningar  attended the scene as well as volunteers who stopped the fire from breaking over ‘Kemp’s’  lane on 2 occasions.

Land owned by the Spackman family was saved from certain losses thanks to individuals. The speed of the wind and its direction would have resulted in major property losses.

Essential Energy staff have attended the scene and a section has been cordoned off for investigations to proceed.

Some footage from the fire is available to be viewed below.
