This week’s local legend began life on 27 December 1940 in the private hospital across the road from MPS, as many of the twin towns residents did for a period of years. Yvonne Batinich was the youngest child of Dan and Doris (Brown) Croak of ‘Mayfield’ Galong. Mary Yvonne was proceeded by Caroline, Madeleine (Stewart) and Bart. The Croak ancestors had originally come from a little village in southern Ireland called Horse and Jockey. Daniel’s grandfather had selected ‘Mayfield’ near Galong as was the practice. Incidentally, Daniel was a popular name in the family over the years with a Daniel turning up quite regularly. Doris was a sister to Bartholomew Brown which makes Yvonne a first cousin to Pat Brown (last week’s local legend) and other Browns in the district. Yvonne said her parents were avid readers and had a great love of history, politics and world events. Indeed, even though only a youngster she remembers photos of the top brass involved in World War II, such as Patton, Eisenhower, Rommel, Stalin etc.,on the wall.
