At around 5:00pm on Anzac Day, a storm cell passed over the Jugiong Road 15km south of Harden, leaving the appearance of a veritable winter wonderland over the landscape. Thick hail blanketed hills and paddocks, and made road conditions treacherous for drivers caught in the storm.
A freak hail storm hail storm on Anzac Day also battered parts of Sydney. The hail was so heavy that warehouses in the Sydney suburb of Huntingwood, including an Arnotts biscuits storage facility, had their roves collapse from the weight of the hail. The storm also delayed the St George v Roosters Anzac Day match by half an hour.
Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) forecaster Francois Geffroy said a drop in freezing levels as part of the storms prompted the hail.
‘We had a surface trough move across the state but also an upper trough moving through as well,’ he said.
‘That was associated with the pool of cold air that saw low freezing levels.’
