Many Binalong people have watched with interest as Tony Blair and friends have prepared the surface of the wall bordering Pioneer Park for a brand new mural. Many wonder what the new mural will look like and who can be involved.

First, a bit of history: The original Binalong mural (pictured only a few weeks ago) was conceived, designed and painted by Lizz Murphy in 1983 for the Court House Centenary Celebrations. In a nice twist, it was John Blair (Ton’s father) who prepared the whole surface back then. Lizz has never forgotten John’s contribution or the assistance with the background colours from Gay, a former resident (and her young children).

In recent years the mural’s state was discussed in various forums, especially Binalong Progress Association and Binalong Arts Group Inc. It was clear that the community was keen to either restore the old mural or replace it with a new one. So in late 2014, a small sub-committee of Lizz Murphy, Yvette Gilroy, Hayley Crossing and Robyn Sykes got together to tackle the mural question.

Initially it was hoped some parts of the original artwork could be retained, but on closer inspection the committee decided complete replacement would be the best option. Design elements were discussed and preliminary sketches prepared.

Then in early 2015, the John Gilbert 150 year anniversary preparations swung into action. An unveiling of the new mural on May 16 was agreed. Suddenly there was a deadline and the mural work took on new urgency. The committee was absolutely delighted when Janet Dawson Boddy indicated her willingness to be involved. With Janet on board, further work on design and ideas has been proceeding apace.

In brief, the new mural will retain the Gilbert theme, be sympathetic to the original and retain some elements of its style and colour. It is designed with a sense of changing light and times of day to incorporate the story and will contain a small scale replica of the original work.

“I am looking forward to seeing more of Janet Dawson Boddy’s concept,” said Lizz Murphy today, “and very excited about what will be Binalong’s first art collaboration by its now numerous talented artists.”

Binalong Arts Group Inc is now running a paint drive, to facilitate the transformation of the design sketches to splendid mural. You could help provide a drip (gold coin) a drop ($5-10) or a whole can (up to $60). Please drop donations to the Binalong Post Office or send to Binalong Arts Group Inc, c/- Post Office, Binalong.

Thank you to Sibelco (owner of Galong lime mine) and the Rotary Club of Yass, which have kicked in $800 and $300 respectively.

When the design is ready for paint and brushes, artists and helpers will be welcome to help turn the current blank wall into a vibrant historical scene. Watch this space for days and times! The new Gilbert Mural is a Binalong Arts Group Inc project.
