Hilltops Council candidate, Rita O’Connor, insists the region is capable of far more than most expect. With economic, environmental, and community innovation at the top of her agenda, she believes the opportunities are endless in even the smallest of communities. With a solid understanding of the local economic climate, her key ambition is to develop strategy that promotes direction for economic development.
A focus of Rita’s campaign is to attract new business to the Hilltops region, “we must develop growth in jobs and the local economy”. “We need increased road funding, Harden needs natural gas and Boorowa needs potable water. These are absolutely vital for our communities to function and advance,” Rita said. “Developing sustainable practices such as recycling and renewable energy are crucial for long term economic viability”.
“We must look at our land use and rationalise residential land for sale. I want an LEP that is proactive about the possibilities of investigating diverse sustainable practices.” Using her 32 years of educational experience, Rita will lobby for improved educational opportunities for both young people and adults. She believes, “education is key to expanding existing business while encouraging innovative ideas within the community”.
Being a mother to five, and grandmother to four, Rita understands the importance of promoting initiatives to build and integrate communities that offer support to local families. As a Rotarian and member of the Local Health Advisory Committee, Rita believes, “we must retain current medical services and lobby for improved services for youth, mental health, and mothers of young children.”
