STRONG WINDS ON CENTRAL AND SOUTHERN PARTS OF NEW SOUTH WALES COAST AND RANGES

A trough is moving through southern New South Wales with vigorous westerly winds ahead of and behind the front.

DAMAGING WINDS, averaging 60 to 70 km/h with peak gusts of 90 to 100 km/h are currently being observed along parts of the ranges and coastal areas.

DAMAGING WINDS, averaging 80 to 90 km/h with peak gusts of 110 km/h are forecast about the Alpine peaks this evening.

Winds are expected to moderate Wednesday morning.

BLIZZARDS are possible above 1300 metres in the Alpine area from late this afternoon lowering to 1000 metres overnight.

The National Parks Service of NSW recommends that people consider postponing back country travel until conditions improve.

Locations which may be affected include Newcastle, Gosford, Sydney, Wollongong, Nowra, Katoomba, Canberra, Goulburn and Cooma.

98 km/h gust observed at Braidwood at 2:00 pm.
90 km/h gust observed at Nowra at 1:40 pm.
93 km/h gust observed at Cooma at 12:15 pm.

The State Emergency Service advises that people should:
* Move vehicles under cover or away from trees.
* Secure or put away loose items around your house, yard and balcony.
* Keep at least 8 metres away from fallen power lines or objects that may be energised, such as fences.
* Report fallen power lines to either Ausgrid on 131 388, or Endeavour Energy on 131 003 or Essential Energy on 132 080, as shown on your power bill.
* For emergency help in floods and storms, ring your local SES Unit on 132 500.

The next warning is due to be issued by 11:05 pm.

Warnings are also available through TV and Radio broadcasts, the Bureau’s website at www.bom.gov.au or call 1300 659 218. The Bureau and State Emergency Service would appreciate warnings being broadcast regularly.
