The twin town’s Jack Alcorn was announced as School Captain and Boarding Captain, in a spectacular ceremony to mark the 90th anniversary of St Gregory’s College, in Campbelltown. Attended by ex-students, in particular a group from the class of ’68 including Adrian Stadtmiller, along with present student’s families which included Andy and Maree Brown and Phill and Paula Alcorn from Harden.
It was something to behold when over a thousand voices, led by the school band, sang at the ceremony. Held in Brother Luke Hall, it told the story of how it all began in 1926 and traced the history of the college over the 90 years. St.Gregory’s College was established on farmlands, now known as Gregory Hills through the generosity of Thomas Donavan and his family. It was established to give young men the skills to forge successful careers on the land. For many years it was a working farm and students assisted with the duties, whilst undertaking their academic studies. Initially struggling to attract numbers when times were tough, city students were attracted, followed by students from all over the state during the war, because of its location.
Over the years St. Gregs has gone from strength to strength with many generations of families being educated by the Marist Brothers. The 90th celebration dinner was held in the Cube at the Campbelltown Catholic Club on Friday evening where over 350 guests were entertained by the college band and singers, led by Josiah Moehau. These young gentlemen could have quite a future in the music industry, should they pursue this direction in life. Congratulations must go to the organisers of these extremely impressive celebrations and to Mr. Damien Miller, College Headmaster and Mr. Matthew Brennan, Deputy Headmaster who was the MC for the evening.
