Tony Flanery, Di Peisly, Simon Watts, Michelle Kennett, Andrew Kennett, Barb Sargent, Darren Sargent and Brenden Mckay have formed a steering committee for the proposed Harden Regional Development Corporation.

An extraordinary meeting was held at the Harden Country Club on Tuesday night, where the Harden Chamber of Commerce was dissolved and a group of attendees proposed a new venture, to steer the business community. President Hilton Doberer was thanked for his contribution to the Chamber over the past years by both Simon Watts and John Horton. He was congratulated for his efforts in taking the chamber from the main street to incorporate other issues including the Harden signwriting on Madden’s trucks, assistance with Pepe’s, Sibelco, the caravan park and the annual Business Awards.

The attendees of the meeting proposed that a new group be formed under the auspices of the Harden Regional Development Corporation, and be set up with a meeting to be held on Juy 5 where nominations will be taken to form the executive. In the mean time the steering committee will meet on Tuesday June 21 at the Harden Country Club at 6pm in preparation for meeting in July. It is proposed that the new corporation will have a shop front in the twin towns and will bring many businesses, as well as community, sporting and events under the one banner to help provide cohesion and a strong voice for the area.

Discussion was had regarding the rationalisation of sporting facilities in the township with proposals to re house the tennis courts on Albury Street into a new facility including netball courts and bowling greens. A new and expanded function room for up to 300 people was also discussed which may double as an in-door sporting area. Special mention was made of trucking movements through Harden and how they can be best catered for. It was also proposed that each executive position would encompass a portfolio which would help provide direction to the new corporation. Watch this space
