The Pepe’s Organsiation has spent the last 12 months discussing options with various Shire Councils as to where they may construct their new facility. Harden Shire Council became the focus of the new venture for several reasons. Frank Comito said the strategic location of the Shire was a contributing factor.
The fact that the facility will be so well-placed on the Burley Griffin Way and the Hume Highway helped in the decision to lodge a Development Application with the Harden Shire. Mayor Chris Manchester met with the Pepe’s Group on several occasions and the majority of the Councillors visited several facilities.
The Support of the whole Council and the broader community highlighted the district’s enthusiasm for the project. The construction phase of the process will have a strong focus on utilising local labour and resources wherever possible. All fuel used by the plant will be bought locally, and Mr Comito stays at the Harden Motel when in town.
Mayor Manchester said the new project will be a boost to the agricultural sector of the community, and it will be a good example to city businesses who wish to escape the urban sprawl for a cost-effective alternative. With the urban sprawl and the possibility of the Badgery’s Creek Airport, there could be other opportunities like Pepe’s which could be looking in Harden’s direction in the future.
