Major Michael Shanahan’s great niece, Lynne Connors and husband Michael from Ipswich Qld. travelled through Harden Murrumburrah on Tuesday in search of the replica of her great uncle on “Bill the Bastard.” Staff of the Twin Town Times directed her to Murrumburrah and arranged for Carl Valerius to be there for a chat. Carl is currently working on the full size Bill and soldiers and expects to have it completed early August. Lynne said, “My sisters and cousins will be thrilled to hear about what is happening in Murrumburrah and we would like to come back for the unveiling of the full size replica. I am very impressed. I remember as a small child playing around my great uncle who had a false leg. He had a bullet wound received after his historic rescue and lost the leg when gangrene set in. He used to play jokes on the littlies and all the cousins had such fun. He used to pull himself around on some hessian whilst weeding the garden.” Carl said, “Many of the Light Horses were killed after the war but Bill was actually cared for by the Turks and lived well into the 1920’s.” Pictured is Lynne & Michael Connors and Carl Valerius.
