The Shine Shield will celebrate 50 years in 2016. It was instigated by Buster Shine a Binalong resident, when he donated the money for a shield which would be competed for by Harden, Jugiong, Yass and Binalong Swimming Clubs.
Buster considered it important for children to learn to swim and to be competitive was seen as an advantage. One of the first ‘youngsters’to have been involved in the early years remembers well how Buster would make a generous donation at the kiosk at the Binalong Pool, so the children could enjoy a treat after swimming practice. It was a great way to encourage participation.
Harden won the 2014 Shield on 1863 points, just clear of Binalong (1634), Yass (1555) and Jugiong, which ended up on 1442 points.
The Shine Shield will take place on Wednesday 13th January at 5.30 pm at the Harden Pool. Jugiong will play host on Saturday 16th beginning at 4.30 for 5pm and Yass Shine Shield will take place on Wednesday 20th January.
Binalong will turn on the celebrations as only Binalong can on the 30th January and make the 50th Shine Shield one to remember. This event will commence at 3 pm with games, cutting of the anniversary cake and a barbeque will be in operation. A march past will take place followed by the Shine Shield events.
Mark this event on the calendar and roll up for what should prove to be a day to remember.
