Jugiong Public School was the beneficiary of Sunday’s Open Garden Day which was held at Sam and Sue Chisholm’s beautiful property, Bundarbo which nestles among the Jugiong hills. A continual stream of vehicles arrived and departed after partaking of a tour of the gardens and surrounding grounds. One visitor said, “It was a lovely experience, so shady and tranquil.” The garden is planted with many species of trees including gums, poplars, robinas, pepper and Chinese elms to name a few. Shady areas extend many metres because of the sheer size of some of these beautiful trees.

Jugiong Public School P&F and students organised a wonderful day which ran like clockwork. From parking, food & drink as well as transport (golf carts) to take patrons up the long drive, they had all areas covered. Much of the food was provided by the Long Track Pantry. Judy McFadyen, Principal of the school said, “We had over 1,600 adults and around 400 children attend the open garden and were thrilled with the event. It will go a long way to improving our playgrounds .” According to Sue Chisholm, Bundarbo was established in 1847 by Henry Osborne and remained in the family until the Chisholms purchased it.

They have restored and modified the homestead and surrounding buildings, as well as the garden which was designed by Edna Wallings in the 50’s, which has been transformed under the guidance of Trisha Dixon Burkitt. The homestead overlooks the billabong. the garden contains a variety of fruit trees which make up the orchard along with an olive grove. Mark Williams and Janet Herring have been responsible for the maintenance of this peaceful place.

Whilst wandering the grounds the Twin Town Times photographer, came upon Woodley Smith and Pat Browne taking a well earned rest. They were sitting with a young lady, Beverle Irvine, who had grown up in Darwin with a young lass by the name of Sonia Fairall. Well, it came to pass that Pat’s sister, Beryl had married Bede Fairall, who had a brother Rex, who indeed turned out to be Sonia’s dad. Talk about 6 degrees of separation!! Beverle has moved to Wagga recently.
