The Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) will be moving its Ginninderra Agricultural Research Station to a 290 hectare site just outside of Boorowa. The CSIRO bought the land from the ‘Castlesteads’ property, and the facility will be located near the intersection of the Yass Road (Lachlan Valley Way) and the Boorowa Road. According Federal Member for Hume, Angus Taylor, the CSIRO’s move is yet another example of city-based industries and establishments relocating to regional areas. “We are seeing a lot of relocation right now from Canberra and Sydney for land based businesses, quite simply because of the expense of the land and because they become land locked,” he told the ABC. “We’ve seen a duck farm move to Harden and some light industrial businesses moving to Goulburn. This is just another example.” The CSIRO agricultural division has pioneered such products such as BARLEYmax, a wholegrain with superior health benefits such as combatting cardiovascular disease, and Linola, a longer lasting flax variety used for stock feed. The CSIRO is also responsible for household inventions such as Aerogard and wireless (Wi-Fi) internet. The move is expected to benefit businesses in the region.
