Ros and Glenn Stewart having been working very hard to get the Hard Rock Gym open.

Glenn & Ros Stewart of the Hard Rock Gym are happy to announce the gym’s official opening for September 13, with memberships being sold at a stall at the Murrumburrah Harden Springtime Show on September 12th.

The gym has been a hot topic of discussion in the town, and the excitement of many has been building in recent weeks in anticipation. Glenn & Ros, with the help of friends and volunteers, have been hard at work to get the gym ready. When open, they envisage it to be a hub for the community. “We’re all about trying to bring the community together,” said Glenn. “There will be something for everyone.” Gentle exercise classes for the elderly and disabled are on the cards, and a more intense work out can be achieved in the weights and cardio room, which is more akin to a warehouse in terms of size and the sheer number and variety of equipment. Instructors of yoga, aerobics or pilates are invited to use the gym to conduct classes, and they can even store their equipment on site. However, the gym is not your usual setup, and it is pioneering a community-orientated model that deviates from that of larger urban gymnasiums.

Facilities include a breakfast bar with kitchenette facilities, a pool table and several computers with internet access. “We want to give young people in the town more things to do,” said Glenn. “There is even a stage and an open area for concerts, and we have a couple of bands booked for later in the year.” Proceeds from the gym will go to funding the Zac’s Place crisis housing initiative in Harden, which is receiving high demand. “In one day recently we had four seperate requests for crisis accommodation in Harden,” said Glenn. Zac’s Place has a house in Albury Street, which was renovated and furnished with the help of local tradesmen and businesses, but demand is such that more houses may be needed. “Proceeds also go to subsidising community programs such as mums and bubs classes, seniors classes, youth memberships as well as any great ideas the community comes up with,” said Glenn. Visit the Zac’s Place Facebook page for more information on both the gym and the Zac’s Place initiative.
