Jugiong hosted a day of celebration and entertainment last Saturday in honour of local hero Sergeant Edmund Parry who was shot dead in a gun fight between Police and the Hall Gang – made up of Bushrangers Johnny Gilbert, Ben Hall and John Dunn – at Jugiong on the 16th of November 1864. This year marks 150 years since the infamous battle.
Five kilometres from Jugiong the Hall Gang held up a mail coach between Gundagai and Jugiong and in the ensuing melee, shot and killed Sergeant Parry. Sergeant Parry’s murderer, Johnny Gilbert, was killed by police in 1865 and is buried at Binalong.
The festivities included a re-enactment of the gun fight, a street parade – with the NSW Police Band, the ACT Pipe Band, the Goldtrails Re-enactment Group and Jugiong Public School students – as well as stage coaches, a vintage car display, market stalls, poetry readings and SES and VRA demonstrations.
The Sgt Parry Memorial Day was another great event held by the Jugiong community, congratulations to all involved.
