Hamish Summerfield, Lana Sumich, Harry Edwards, and Somer Oldfield head to Sydney today for the NSW PSSA State Athletics Championships.
Four dedicated athletes will represent Trinity Catholic School and the Archdiocese of Canberra and Goulburn when competing at the NSW PSSA State Athletics Championships on Thursday.
Hamish Summerfield, Lana Sumich, Harry Edwards, and Somer Oldfield will form the Trinity ‘Pocket Rockets’ Small Schools Relay team in the 4x100m event.
Winners at CCPS Athletics Carnival last month, the talented quartet won their way to state and will now come up against the best Catholic, Private, and Public Small school teams in the state when competing at Sydney Olympic Park.
“They are very excited and have been practising very hard,” said Trinity Catholic School Assistant Principal Rebecca Cooper.
“Some are involved in Little Athletics, and they have been putting on the finishing touches ahead of state.”
It’s an incredible effort for the small school to have a team competing at state, but it’s not the first time this year.
Hamish and Somer were also part of the Trinity Catholic School 4x50m freestyle relay team that competed at the state swimming champs earlier this year.
“We’ve only got 36 students, and to go away for the 50 freestyle relay and now the 4x100m running relay, it’s a big effort,” Cooper said.
“One of our mottos is ‘small schools, big opportunities’, and even though we’re small, we’ve got kids achieving big things and being given big opportunities.”
The Trinity Catholic School relay team will race in their heat at 9.50 a.m. today (Thursday), and if successful, they’ll progress to the final later on this afternoon.
Cooper said everyone in the school and community will be behind their talented relay team.
“Everyone in the school has been helping get them organised and taking them for training sessions, so it’s been a big school effort,” Cooper said.
“In the morning, we’ll all be in the one classroom watching on the big screen and cheering them on.”
The Twin Town Times wish Hamish, Lana, Harry, and Somer the best of luck, and readers can check back next week to read about their exploits.
