The Boorowa Rovers bounced back in Round Two of the 2023 George Tooke Shield with a 34-24 win over the UC Stars in a match that doubled as the Chris Turner Shield at Raiders Belconnen on Saturday.
The Rovers – led by a player’s player performance by Matthew Canellis – were stinging after a tough 16-6 loss to the North Canberra Bears in Round One.
While they started slowly against the Stars, skipper Alex Stewart was happy to see Boorowa hit their stride and run away with a 10-point win.
“We started slowly against North Canberra and didn’t get to our gameplan, and we let them get away from us, and we started the same this week,” Stewart said.
“In the second half, we played how we wanted to play and stuck to our gameplan, and it paid off.” Boorowa boasts a good team of locals in 2023, and Stewart said his side had a lot to play for.
“We’re a young, local team, and it’s the first time in a few years that we have all the locals back involved,” Stewart said.
“They’re working for each other, and it should be a good season.” After back-to-back road trips to open their 2023 campaign, Boorowa is at home on Sunday when hosting the Crookwell Green Devils at Boorowa Showground, and he is hoping for a big crowd to get down to watch them battle the reigning premiers.
“It should be a good day, and hopefully, we get a big crowd with it being on a Sunday and the day after our races,”
