The Coota Blues recorded their 13th consecutive win in AFL Canberra Regional grade at Yass on Saturday defeating the second placed side the Southern Cats by 48 pts.

Despite putting the que in the rack for the last quarter, the Blues booted 13-12-90 to 6-6-42.

The Blues led by 66 pts. at the last change, but were outplayed in the final quarter where the Cats booted  4-2 to 1-2.

In a match, who again confirmed their superiority in the competition, the Blues are encounting a number of injuries. Scott Mazzocchi tore a hamstring in second quarter. Nick Holt received a knock to the head and took no further part in the match.

Couple this with Sandy Maskell Knight and Tom Brody did not play due to injury and Jack Caldwell was unavailable, the Blues had to dig deep to record an excellent win.

Again, Blues skipper Phil Bird dominated around the ground with his strong marking.

18-year-old Aaron Basham played his best match of the season. His strong running and long racking left foot kicks was a feature of his play.

Down back Will Ormond gave the Blues plenty of drive. Will’s one per centres’ makes him an important member Blues line up come finals.

Best: Phil Bird, Aaron Basham, Dylan McDermott, Luke Webb, Will Ormond and Zac Oliver

Goals: Chris Drum 3, Zac Oliver 3 Luke Webb, 2 Will Thompson 2, Sam Larsen Scott Mazzocchi and Tim Hahn.

Next Saturday the Blues play Goulburn at the neutral venue of Yass.

In the other matches, Murrumbateman defeated Yass in the local derby at Yass by 29 pts.  Belconnen showed they will be a force in the finals by thumping Goulburn by 94 pts.

Blues women

The Blues girls put a solid performance against by strong Queanbeyan side, but were beaten 37 pts -5-16-46 to 1-3-9.

For the first time since round two, the Blues were able field a near full side.

The girls started in the fog at Joe O’Connor in Yass. Queanbeyan who last week defeated competition leaders, were certainly inaccurate in front of goals as the score indicates. However, the Blues girls’ pressure resulted in many of the Tigers behinds.

Goal: Brittany Colbertaido.

Best: Sienna Bloor, Emily Poulton, Michaela Perceval, Annette Parkinson, Sally Ormond, and Alyssa Armstrong.

Nest Saturday the girls play Riverina Lions.

The Yass Roos hosted four matches [There has never been more than one match] at Joe O’Connor Park, two women’s matches and two men’s matches with their day raising much-needed funds for the local Can Assist branch.

The first match started in the fog, and then the day turned out to be a brilliant day for Australian Football.
