Big Bad Bustling Zac Allen swats at some Gunning Roos on the way to the Hawks 50-0 win.

Bitterly cold strong wind swept across Harden’s lush green McLean Oval, to herald in the depths of winter last weekend. It signalled to the combatants, Harden Hawks and the Gunning Roos that real football was well and truly upon us. It was also a great celebration of our HAWKS TENTH ANNIVERSARY of their inaugural George Tooke Premiership VICTORY in 2009. Gunning (playing in two blues) started the ball rolling when they kicked off, sending it down towards our town centre. The Hawks retrieved possession, before gaining ground by booting into touch on the Roos 20 line. From the resultant scrum Gunning advanced to half-way before their winger was bundled into touch. The Hawks ran the ball with our Half-Back Jordy Hammond making a decisive winding run of 25 metres before passing to the flying Jono Pouono who touched down between the posts. 4 nil to Harden. Then, in the twinkling of an eye his centre partner Ben Davis scored a fine try for a 10-0 scoreline. Gunning then made a rush and were unlucky not to receive a penalty for a strip, but the referee saw otherwise.

Not long after, Hawk Zac Allen crossed in the corner and it was 14-0. Just before Half-Time Captain Luke Brown stamped his signature on the game with another one of his dummy half dive-over tries. At the interval the score was 20-0 and the Gunning Roos had played quite well. Harden kicked off in the second stanza in brilliant sunshine, but it was laced with an eskimo wind. The Hawks almost began with a rush, but a snappy pass from Luke Brown was ruled forward. Soon afterwards the Hawks redeemed themselves when their Five-Eighth Eddie Jenkins circled around and cut through between the opposing two Centres to score. The wind was causing havoc making goal-kicking difficult, and at this point Harden led 24-0 . Chris Fredericks put the big wheel on crossing for two superb tries. Drew Arabin for the Hawks then produced what could be classed as the KIWI SIDESTEP when he crashed over an opponent for a four pointer and the score over the Roos had jumped to 40-0. With 10 minutes remaining viewing grew somewhat darker with big grey clouds rolling in. President Jason ruled it still bright enough to continue without lights and he was correct as Harden piled on a couple of more tries for a final score of HAWKS 50 ROOS 0. For the next two matches against North Canberra Bears and Bungendore Tigers (both away) THE HAWKS will have to go up a click. Maybe a COACH WHISPERER could be the go, but I’m sure our Team will fill the bill. GO THE HAWKS. WINGS.
