Southern Cross Poll Dorset Stud will be offering 80 Rams for sale this Wednesday June 19.
Owner Keith Smith said, “They have good carcass shape and they are quick maturing with a good length of body. Structurally correct, they stand well and they are sound sheep. We also look for smooth shoulder lines for ease of birthing. A smoother shoulder ram with a low birth weight and high growth rate. Smaller lambs born and quick growers.”
The Smith family commenced their operation in 2007. Keith said, “We did it to get a reliable source of prime lamb size, we had used Poll Dorsets for 50 years and we wanted a consistent supply. An opportunity came up to buy some AI Stud ewes and start our own stud.”
Southern Cross Rams sell their Rams across New South Wales, across the Monaro district, along the Murray and as far out as Hillston and towards Taralga and Crookwell and the Riverina. The fertility has been very attractive with 140% for lambs weaned which is good production.
Each Ram is being sold for $495. The price is approximately a 50 percent saving on Spring pricing for the Rams. The Smiths first started farming in 1892 in the district with the 6th generation now working the same plot of land.
