Christ Church Jugiong Bishop William Grant Broughton, Bishop of Sydney visited Reedy Creek on his way to Gundagai, in January 1850 He met with the principle residents of that area and of Tumut, to determine the practicability of building churches in Gundagai and Tumut and of providing for the support of a clergyman who should minister them conjointly. These areas, since 1839, had formed a part of the Parish of Yass which is one of the Diocese’s oldest ecclesiastical foundations. Reedy Creek now forms the boundary of Yass and Gundagai Parishes. The first references to Jugiong were in 1854 in the registers of Births and Marriages.

The Burial register of 1858 sadly records the death of a four-year-old who was buried at Jugiong. The land which currently comprises the Anglican Cemetery was originally destined to be the site for a church, Parsonage and school, and was dedicated in 1863. The current church site was dedicated in 1873. Members of other denominations, together with the Anglican community worked together to raise the necessary funds. The names of some of the worshippers in this church resonate in Jugiong society today: Messrs Sharman, Coggan, Dixon among others. The fundraising for the church included amounts of £13 and £35. Would that those amounts would pay for much needed repairs now.

Now, attendance is dropping, and it has been expected that the Church would close, with the land sold off for development. A sad blow for those christened, confirmed and married in the Church and who expected that their burial service would be conducted there. A second blow occurred recently when a downpour swept across poorly protected and maintained land and devastated the Cemetery, damaging more than one grave site and causing grief to relatives. Council has been loath to contact the RTA at whose door many lay the blame, and the cost of walling the cemetery means that that work could wait awhile. Meanwhile there has been the glimmer of a ray of sunshine -The Reverend Wendy Bloomfield has offered to come to Jugiong on Wednesday 30th May to offer Holy Communion and to discuss the possibility of resuming some services.

STOP PRESS Reverend Bloomfield will be holding a service on Sunday 29th of July at 11:30am.
