Monty Hyles, Sam Manwaring, Samuel Elphick and Maurie Hyles taste success at the State Final today, claiming a Silver Medal in the 50 Metre Relay.
4 Jugiong Public School students will be celebrating tonight after winning a Silver Medal in the Mixed Open 4 x 50 Metre Freestyle, Earle McGee Relay, at Homebush today.
They were beaten by just .7 of a second by the Bourke/Walgett Distance Education Schools.
Samuel Elphick, Sam Manwaring, Maurie Hyles and Monty Hyles made it all the way to the State Final after competing at Binalong, before going on to win at Temora, and then Albury.
The Jugiong team recorded a time of 2 minutes and 53 seconds at Albury which averaged out to be 43.25 seconds for each swimmer.
Very good for lads in years 4 and 5.
The four young men from the banks of the Murrumbidgee River were ready to rumble today and they didn’t disappoint in the final.
They each swam personal best times to finish on the podium in an excellent effort. They smashed their previous best time by nearly 13 seconds with a finishing time of 2:39.97.
Samuel leapt from the blocks and took up the first leg in a great time of 41.62 before handing over to Sam, who flew down the lane in 40.56.
Sam was greeted by the first of the Hyles boys in Maurie, who took to the 3rd leg like a Murrumbidgee Cod, flashing along in his 50 metres to record a great time of 40.16. Maurie handed over to Monty Hyles who must have had an outboard motor on his back. Monty screamed down the pool in the final leg and recorded an amazing time of 37.63 ensuring a Silver Medal for his team mates.
Principal Deborah Main said, “They just missed out on the Gold. It was just amazing, to go down there and do what they have done for a small school like ours is great.”
Linda Jones managed the boys throughout their carnivals and on the big day. She said, “It’s the family support. They were just amazing, parents and grandparents. We are so proud of them, the school is just so proud to see them do what they did. To make it this far. They all swam PBs, it’s great.”
It’s unclear if the boys will get a rest day tomorrow or not, but it is unlikely. Their fellow students at Jugiong will want to see their medals and congratulate them on doing their school proud.
It hasn’t been an easy path for the primary schoolers who were forced to continue their training at Coota and Young after the Jugiong Pool closed in March.
