Eliza Butt scores a try under the posts against Bungendore on Saturday.

It was a weird and wonderful weekend of footy in the twin towns with scoreboards showing scores that wouldn’t normally be up in lights the way spectators may have thought the games would have panned out. The Hawkettes were down 4-0, but a strong comeback saw them close the game out 26-4.

Coach Jason Pollard said, “The Hawkettes didn’t play too well in the first half, too many errors, which kept Bungendore in it. We pushed too many passes and made too many mistakes in the first half.

“Bungendore were pretty good as well. They saved a lot of tries with last ditch efforts. Their fullback was really good for them. She stopped seven or eight tries.

“We got rolling in the second half and held the ball and scored some good tries.

“Their defence was good, they threw a bit at us and to our credit a win is a win, but we can still improve a lot.

“We also had a few missing which doesn’t help, but that’s the way it is.

“Georgia Smith only played for about ten minutes of the first half as she hurt her ankle. She did go back on strapped up, but she wasn’t like her normal self, so we hope she’s ok as she rolled it.

“Georgia, Emma James, Clare Smith and Eliza Butt were among our best players for the Harden side.

“Georgia rips them apart in attack, where Emma is a ball player and kicker. Emma’s game on the weekend was a lot different, she ran the ball a lot and took the line on. She played really well. I think she scored two tries.

“Eliza got man of the match and player’s player by a mile on the weekend. She was best on ground easily. She’s a good dummy half, it actually doesn’t matter where she plays.

“Jade Emms has also been doing very well for us. She’s up there, a very good player for a young girl that has only played five or six games.

With the Hawks club set to take on UC and the men’s match meant to be here after forfeiting to Harden last round, the girls take on UC this week in Canberra although check the Hawks’ Facebook page for details.

Pollard’s next challenge will be Boorowa. “That will be a bit of a challenge for us as they are hitting a bit of form in the girls and we have a couple of players away in Eliza Butt and Clare Smith. Clare has Australian League tag training that day.
