Harden Red Devils’ President Charlie Brown has been named the 2023 South West Cup Player of the Year.
It was obviously a tight contest with the competition full of talented players, however, Brown’s selflessness to play out of position for the team and continue to be one of the best winners of the ball at the breakdown, likely put him at the top of the list.
Brown, a hard-working forward who epitomises everything it means to pull on a Harden jersey, was undoubtedly the RedDevil’s best player this season. Throughout the year, he drew praise from opposition coaches and players alike, with most noting his never-say-die attitude and the class he added to the Harden forward pack.
Red Devils’ coach, Jack Alcorn, said Brown’s recognition as the competition’s best player was well-deserved.”
He has definitely been the best player in our team, and not just with what he does on the field, but with how he lifts the boys around him,” Alcorn said.
“He brings the skills and experience, and he’s played a lot of high-level rugby at school and in Sydney, plus he has represented Central West for the last couple of years.
“When asked what the main thing Brown brought to Harden’sgame, Alcorn said it was the manner in which he went about his business.
“He’s got a bit of grunt and just goes and goes,” Alcorn said.
“He’s an 80-minute man, which is so important for a small-town team like Harden.
“At only 24, Brown is one of the senior players in a young RedDevils outfit that made finals in 2023, and Alcorn believes the club’s future is looking bright.
“We’ve got a lot of young fellas coming through,” Alcorn said.
“We had a lot of players retire over the last few years, and there is a good, young crowd coming through, and I believe over the next couple of years, we’ll be looking to get back up toward the top of the ladder.”
Alcorn, Brown and the rest of the Harden Red Devils will celebrate 2023 at their end-of-season presentation, which will be held at The Light Horse Hotel Murrumburrah on September 16.
