It was an interesting Round Two of Central West Rugby South West Cup action, and the Harden Red Devils got on the board following a strong 22-5 victory over the Temora Tuskers at Temora Recreation Ground on Saturday.
The Red Devils put a Round One draw with Boorowa behind them, jumping out of the blocks against Temora to score two quick tries and lead 10-nil.
Temora fought back with tough pick and drives to make a tight score line of 10-5 at halftime.
Jeremy Martin and Beefa Richens toughed it out in the scrum while the likes of Justin Stewart and Jake ‘Fast Guy’ Christie ran rings around the outside for a few tries scattered about in the second half as the Red Devils ran in a somewhat comfortable victory over the Tuskers.
Player’s player was Justin Stewart, and the best and fairest points went to Jake Christie (3), Brendan Madden (2), and Patrick Smith (1) An unbeaten Harden outfit will get their chance to snatch another win in Round Three when hosting the winless West Wyalong Weevils on Saturday.
In other Round Two south West Cup men’s matches, reigning premiers Young made the trip to Blayney, going down to the Rams 23-22.
Angelo Agatasi scored a double for the Yabbies, but it wouldn’t be enough, as Blayney showed off their credentials leading into what should be an interesting season of rugby.
The West Wyalong Weevils put up a good fight against the always-strong Cootamundra at home on Saturday, with the Tri-Colours knocking over the Weevils 15-5.
Unfortunately, there was no match played between Boorowa and Grenfell. In South West Cup women’s action, there was only two games played on Saturday, with Cootamundra making it two-from-two, defeating West Wyalong 45-10.
Coota have been lucky to pick up several players from the She-Devils side who were unable to get a team on the paddock this year.
The Boorowa Goldilocks were too good for Grenfell, winning 39-10. In Round Three, Young host Boorowa on Friday night, and on Saturday.
Cootamundra play Blayney, Grenfell host Temora, and Harden are at home to West Wyalong.
