The name Monica O’Connor has carried itself across the town and through the decades and will now be honoured in Aussie history with a Medal of the Order of Australia, a well-deserved achievement.

Her hard work at Harden Can Assist has changed many’s lives, and her dedication to serving the town is exactly why this medal is awarded to Mrs O’Connor.

The former President of Can Assist Harden was so surprised to be awarded the OAM, she didn’t think her nomination was real.

“I received an email from the Governor General and his secretary probably a couple of weeks before Christmas,” she said.

“I was going through my emails and everybody does get a lot of spam or scam emails so I read that and I thought, oh, this is a scam.

“I was delighted, I read it again. Now that’s definitely a scam and then luckily, my daughter was in the lounge room with me so I showed it to her and she said she thought it was real.

“It was just to say I’ve been nominated and then I didn’t hear any more until a couple of weeks before Australia Day and I received another email from the same source saying I had been accepted.” Monica didn’t know how to process the information that she would be awarded the OAM.
