Binalong locals have chipped in to help the people of Eugowra after the town was decimated by floods.

All of NSW experienced flooding however, Eugowra got the grunt of it due to the town being one of the flattest places in the southern hemisphere.

The town was devastated by the floods with a reported one in five people having to go on top of their roofs waiting to be rescued, the towns ‘Eugowra Central Hotel’ was torn apart and children have only just began returning to school.

Eugowra received help from Mathoura who’ve ran multiple fundraisers for their fellow small town and have raised thousands have dollars for Eugowra.

Binalong man Ben Spencer was happy to help a town in need.

“We had seven people stay the night on Friday and then three more people joined us on Saturday,” said Ben.

“We went out a fortnight ago and then last weekend we had two people go back and deliver some supplies.

“We will get a gauge on if it’s worth going back up there, it’ll depend on how they’re going on the ground in Eugowra.

“We’d like to do a pre-Christmas run but it will depend on our timeline.

“The state of it was shocking, there were houses of their footings, roads ripped apart, animals swept down the creek. Just massive damage.

“On Friday afternoon we unloaded our gear and then loaded up on dog food and loaded up the esky and drove around handing out beers and dog food, we also had $2000 worth of gift-cards raised through donations that we handed out.

“On Saturday night we had a large tipper trailer that we just kept loading up with people’s belongings.

“One of our boys was a plumber so he was utilised fixing hot water systems and reconnected some houses to water.

“We helped some elderly move their furniture off of the road onto the trailer, then a very generous man gave us his bobcat and we used it to clean up mud out of people’s sheds and after that we left about 5 pm on the Saturday,” Ben continued.

The volunteers who went down and helped were Ben and Michael Spencer, Adrien Priem, Jeffrey Withers, Jane Dyball, Nathan Ryan, George, Libby and Ange Elliot and Max Giles.

The flooding in Eugowra was nothing short of tragic, taking people’s homes, jobs, vehicles and even some people’s lives.

The town needs every bit of help they can get, so well done to the people from and around Binalong on giving them a helping hand.
