Murrumburrah High’s Open girls Soccer side have proven to be giant killers, after accounting for the opposition James Fallon High School at Robert’s Park in Murrumburrah today.

The competition pits combined high schools against each other with James Fallon boasting a cohort of 733 players, compared to MHS’ 140.

Girls as young as years 7 and 8 combined with some of our experienced seniors to put it to the school from Albury and go in to half time with a 3-1 lead. It was the Emms girls who led the way with Brooke scoring twice and Jade bagging a double.

Sam Emms bolstered the defensive stocks for MHS by leaving her usual role in the goal to take up the centre back position.

Coach Ali Spencer heaped praise on her players, many of whom had backed up from their weekend sport commitments.

She said, “It was 3-1 at the end of the first half and each team scored another goal in the second half. We had a very good defensive line with Sam Emms at Centre back alongside Chloe Wade.

Hunter Ings dominated in the midfield and should be a soccer player as well as a Rugby League player.”

The side also had a number of younger players with Spencer highlighting the important contributions made by Nia Raptis, Charlene Caboral and Shari Arabin, who all played well. Hayley Hambrook went in to the goal and did a greta job. Spencer said, “Being a full-back in League Tag she has great hand eye coordination and was incredible there.”

MHS will play either Narrandera (305 students) or Murrumbidgee Regional High School (1,242 students) from Griffith and they will know who they will play soon, with the match to be held in the next 3 weeks.

MRHS pipped MHS at the post last year, so to go one better and to make the final will be an incredible effort.

Spencer said, “The younger students stood up today and we have lots of people to thank. A huge thank you to David Carter who refereed the game and the linesmen Dean Kaboot and Riley Arabin. We had some parents and student supporters ferried down in the school bus by our principal who was also down here watching. The girls did us proud.”
