Harden She Devils Captain Maddie Douglass has been awarded Player of the Year in the Westfund Health Insurance South West Cup.
Announced on Friday, Maddie was crowned joint winner with Condobolin player Krystal Fyfe.
The announcement came as quite a shock for Maddie.
“It wasn’t something I was expecting, there are so many other girls out there that are really deserving of it and it could have gone to anyone.”
“I am very grateful to be awarded Player of the Year.”
Maddie was very humbled by receiving the award saying it is as much a team award as it is an individual award.
“I couldn’t have done it without the girls behind me. We have put in a lot of hard work behind the scenes to get our play up to scratch.”
Maddie believes that the She Devils team that took the field this year is one of the strongest that the She Devils have ever had.
Once the She Devils got out onto the paddock everyone knew their jobs which Maddie believes made it easier for herself on field and put her in great positions at times.
Maddie regards this season as tough saying the team had limited ball possession in many games that it hard for them to turn it over and be in control of the game.
“Personally for myself I think it was a mediocre season, some games were good, others we average. I am a person who tries to do my best.”
The most enjoyable part of the season for Maddie was when the whole team was together.
“We had such a good team this year, no one felt left out and we all got along so well.”
Maddie will now focus on the rest of the season with the Harden Hawkettes if the season goes ahead.
“In 2022. I’ll hopefully return to the She Devils and come back hungry for a few wins.”
Maddie would like to thank She Devils coach Anna Slavin who took on the challenge of coaching and playing and Harry Sachs who helped the team strengthen their game throughout the season.
Maddie would also like to thank the committee for helping put a great year on for both teams in a very trying year.
Maddie wasn’t the only Devil recognised with fly-half Tom Lenehan awarded top points scorer of the Oilsplus South West Cup competition.
Tom scored 94 points in the regular season that saw the Devils only lose one game.
Congratulations to both players on their achievements.
