Tahlia Crane, Times Cadet Journalist.
If you had asked me in my last year of high school in 2017 where I would be at the age of 21 I would have told you I would be travelling the world. Four years on I have completed a university degree and am now entering a post student life. I have been employed by The Times for two months now and doing something I never thought I would be doing.
After completing all of the graphic design electives I could, in my final year of university I completed a journalism subject. After studying the subject I though that journalism could be an interesting job but never thought that it would be something I would pursue. Since starting at The Times I have been working in a number of different areas such as story writing, layout and designing advertising, I have also been involved in creating videos that have appeared on the Facebook pages.
Travelling from Gundagai but also being able to work from home has been an advantage with the role. From my two months employment I have enjoyed writing stories from many different angles and many different categories. I have particularly enjoyed writing about sport happening around the area, especially rugby league and rugby union. Advertisement design is also something I have enjoyed as it lets me use my creative outlet and gives me a break from writing stories.
Designing these advertisements has helped me gain familiarity with the businesses around the area which is a very important part about working in a local business. Although I am employed as a journalist I still get to carry a camera around with me and take photos which is my passion. I guess that is the beauty of working in a small locally run business.
I know that if I was in a city in this same job there would be no way I would be able to work in a variety of areas as I am now. There have been many positives working at The Times such as being able to work in a very welcoming environment. This is something I have found very helpful when entering a new working industry.
Matt and Chris have been great in helping me learn the ropes and guiding me along the way to make me a great journalist. I am looking forward to continuing my work here in the Twin Towns and Cootamundra and helping bring local news to the community.
