16-year-old Jesse Glover represented Hennessy Catholic College in Goulburn at the annual arch diocesan swimming carnival on Tuesday, and made the Mackillop side to swim in the major Sydney competition later this month.

He was successful in the 50m freestyle and 50m butterfly and swam personal bests in both, 29.30 seconds and 34 seconds respectively.

The impressive performance will see Jesse go on to the NSW Catholic College Competition at the Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre on March 29.

Although young Glover is happy with his performance and excited for Sydney, he knows there will be some tough swimmers in the lanes beside him.

“I was excited that I made it for two events this year and I am happy that I made it to Sydney,” he said. “But, I know I will face some fierce competition out there so I am just hoping to be able to walk away with some personal bests.

“Overall I think I swam well, but I just need to focus on my starts and maybe put in a little more training.”

Mum Karen Glover added that Jesse is a natural talent at the sport, that he can go further if he wishes. “I am very proud of Jesse’s swimming efforts and although he doesn’t train for it, he always gets in and gives it a crack,” she said.

“He is 16 and swimming against guys that train all the time. As you can see they are built a lot bigger than he is.”

The current Year 11 student from Hennessy Catholic College started swimming at an early age and swims at the Harden pool with coaches Rebecca Cooper and Bob Guttridge from time to time.

Also living locally, Jesse loves his rugby league and has recently taken up golf following his father’s footsteps.

Jesse’s older brother Jack was also supposed to swim on Tuesday but unfortunately broke his leg playing touch football two weeks ago.
