Jeremy ‘Marto’ Martin has been great for the Devils in 2020 after returning from injury. He is pictured about to take on 2 West Wyalong players on Saturday at Robert’s Park.
Jeremy Martin tore a number of ligaments off the bone in an accident last year. Unfortunately for the 27 year old Harden Prop, he suffered from Avulsion fractures. To the uninitated, an avulsion fracture is an injury to the bone in a location where a tendon or ligament attaches to the bone. When an avulsion fracture occurs, the tendon or ligament pulls off a piece of the bone. To put it frankly, Jeremy’s ankle was a mess.
Due to the swelling it was hard to see the damage he had done.
An attempt to get the swelling down failed and Jeremy had to have an MRI
7 weeks after the initial accident. It showed the extent of his injury.
He said “On February 7 I had major surgery. They were going to go in with an arthroscope but the ankle wasn’t stable enough. They ended up cutting me open down the side and did a full ligament and tendon reconstruction.”
Jeremy didn’t want to miss work or his Rugby and went and saw James Shannon in Young. Well known for looking after all sorts of athletes and being a former rugby player himself, he was a great choice to work with Jeremy.
Jeremy said I worked with him to get back to work and we started working towards rugby.
I started doing strengthening and conditioning with the ankle and started footy training back up.
Jeremy admitted that due to the nature of the injury his ankle wasn’t 100 percent back to where it was. It may never be, but, it is an amazing turnaround to be back on the football paddock.
He said, “I can’t thank Shanno enough, he knew I wanted to get back on the paddock and we got it done. He said mate if you want to be back playing this year we can get you back. When I got back to training I didn’t have to second guess it.”
Jeremy is now in the prime of his career. It’s his second year of senior rugby after playing several years in the juniors.
With the Devils having just enjoyed their 4th win from as many games he is rearing to go against Coota on Saturday at Coota.
