The Jugiong Fishing Club have recently released 6000
Yellowbelly and 4000 Murray Cod fingerlings into the Murrumbidgee River at Jugiong.
Jugiong Fishing Club Committee member Kevin Fairall said “We
released them in different spots along the river. The fingerlings were purchased from Uarah Fisheries at Grong Grong with the funds raised from the November 2019 Jugiong Carpathon weekend. The Department of
Primary Industry gave dollar for dollar as well, so we were able to put in $3000 and they matched that.”
The Dollar for Dollar Native Fish Stocking Program was introduced in 1998 by NSW DPI to benefit anglers. Under the program,
community groups apply to the NSW Recreational Fishing Trust (funded by the recreational fishing licence) for matching funds to
purchase native fish from licensed commercial hatcheries for
stocking rivers and dams in the Murray Darling system and east of the great divide.
The program aims to enhance recreational freshwater fishing
opportunities, to support local communities in the stocking high value native fish species, to assist in the development of regional aquaculture industries and to increase community and industry involvement in, and awareness of responsible stocking.
Kevin and the Jugiong Fishing Club are hopeful that the
Coronavirus situation will calm down and that the Jugiong Carpathon is still able go ahead later this year.
