Wombat Public School have become leaders in Audio Visual and Filmaking after a 3 and a half minute movie which was filmed and edited by the school came in the top 5 for the Southern NSW region. The competition ‘Film By The Coast’ showcased the students skills and culminated in an invitation to an awards ceremony where over 70 submissions had been entered. Wombat PS received an encouragement award which only went to the top 5 movies.
Teacher Hamish Walton said, “Venessa brought the FBTC festival to my attention. I thought it would be a great way to engage the students with a cross curriculum unit incorporating aspects of drama, english and art. The script was student driven with minimal input from myself. We mapped the initial idea and followed a narrative story graph as practiced in class (7 steps).” From start to finish the film took around a term and a half and was all shot at Wombat. The group discussed and mind mapped each scene to ensure none of the allotted 3.5 minutes was wasted.
Mr Walton said, “It was fully filmed and edited by myself and the class. It was shot on an ipad and the Parents all chipped in to help with costumes, props and ideas. After a frantic rush to finish ‘Game Wrecker’ the film was submitted to FBTC film festival at Thirroul.” Wombat PS were notified week 1 of term 4 that their film had made it into the festival. The students were extremely excited and a road trip was planned.
