The region will be cheering on Youngstar in the Melbourne Cup on Tuesday with the $34 chance lining up in the race that stops the nation.

Youngstar was bred by Young based stud Bowness and is part owned by Yass residents Greg and Jan Minahan and Young residents Jack and Karen Sheather.

Youngstar qualified for the big race after a third placing at Royal Randwick on October 19.

The 5 year old bay mare has recovered from minor surgery  after finishing sixth in last year’s cup.

Trained by Chris Waller out of Rosehill and ridden by top hoop Tommy Berry, Youngstar was a $200,000 yearling purchase at the Inglis Melbourne Premier Yearling sale.

She did not race as a two-year-old but ran fourth at her first start at Canterbury in December 1, 2017 before Waller gave her more time to mature ahead of her autumn three-year-old campaign.

Tommy Berry rode Auvray in the race last year when Youngstar finished sixth. If Youngstar can beat the other 23 thoroughbreds home it will be Waller’s first taste of Melbourne Cup success.

“You dream about winning a Melbourne Cup before you dream about being a jockey,” Berry said.

“It is only comes around once year, it’s hard to get rides in the race let alone decent rides. She is a very good stayer on her day and she will make her presence felt.”
