17 year old Max Spackman is headed for Homebush after he threw the Javelin 42.69 metres at Riverina athletics in Albury last week, beating the field of competitors.

Max broke the record at Murrumburrah Public School school in year 9, however, he didn’t go on to represent as he had other engagements on at the time.

Now in year 11, Max threw 38 metres at MHS. He went on to throw 40 metres at district at Temora, before his massive effort at Albury.

Glen Howe has been assisting Max with his throwing and helping him reach his potential.

Max is now focussed on the State trip to Sydney in September

He has always had a pretty good arm on the cricket field but hasn’t played for the last 2 years. He said he has no interest in the disciplines of shot putt or discus but it is clear he is a natural at Javelin.

He said, “it must be all the spear throwing we did as kids out at McMahon’s Reef.”

Max would head out to his Grandfather’s place and go fishing and help rid the waterways of Carp.

Max’s skills don’t only rest with Javelin, he is a very accomplished sprinter. This year he broke the record at MHS for the 100 metre sprint with a time of 11.8 before he came 4th at the next level.

Max enjoys fishing and hunting and spends time doing both with his father Todd.

He enjoys metalwork and using his hands, when we turned up for the interview he was working on his ute.

Max looks to be mature beyond his years and happy to take everything in his stride, he said, “I’m just hoping to get a different experience out of it. Dad bought me some javelins to practice with and I’m training at Robert’s Park.”

Max surprised plenty of people at Albury including himself. He said, “I didn’t expect to win.”

One of Max’s competitors didn’t expect Max to throw as far as he did either. The other competitor had been to Canada for Javelin and didn’t see Max’s throw, only to find out it was further than his.

Max looks to have plenty of potential with the Javelin, we will follow Max’s journey with him. Go Max
