Blues wear down Roos

By Pat Kerin

The Blues had to work hard to wear down the Yass Roos. Leading by only 11 pts. at half time, the Blues booted 9-7 to 3-1 in the final two quarters to win by 54 pts.

Final score 14-14-98 to 7-2-44.

The win by the Blues was tenth consecutive win.

Saturday’s match on the vast open spaces of Joe O’Connor Park in Yass saw the Blues lead by 12 pts at quarter time; the Roos won the second quarter by a pt.

In the opening two quarters, the Blues showed some poor discipline, giving away three 50-metre penalties. With one of those penalties resulting a goal for the home side.

Again Blues captain, Phil Bird easily the best player on the ground. His strong marking and running was a feature of his play.

Scott Mazzocchi played his best match for the Blues. His aerial skills saw him rewarded with three goals.

19-year-old Jack Caldwell is improving every match. His pace around the ball and his ability to beat an opponent, makes Jack an important member of the Blues line up.

Todd Basham received some treatment during the game against Yass Roos.

Best- Phil Bird, Jack Caldwell, Joel Pearson, Dylan McDermott , Scott Mazzocchi and  Zac Oliver.

Goals: Sandy Maskell Knight 4, Scott Mazzocchi 3, Phil Bird 2, Jack Caldwell 2 ,Zac Oliver, Aaron Basham and Dylan McDermott.

The Blues have incurred a couple of injuries out of Saturday’s match. Scott Mazzocchi suffered a back injury. Tom Brody finished the match slightly concussed, while Todd Basham, who was the Blues umpire, tore a calf muscle before three quarter time, but soldered on to complete the match.

Hard to believe Yass has only won two matches as they have pushed the Blues twice this season. The Blues play the Roos in the final round match on August 10 at Joe O’Connor.

At the conclusion of the match, the Blues enjoyed a warm down by having a brief swim in the Yass River, which is adjacent to the western side of the ground.

Next Saturday the Blues host Belconnen.

Both of the other two matches, were close contests, Southern Cats defeated Goulburn by 13 pts. While Belconnen defeated Murrumbateman by 18 pts.

Meanwhile, the Blues girls put in a spirited performance against Eastlake at Kingston Oval,    – before going down by 33 pts. Final score Eastlake 7-6-48 to 2-3-15.

The girl’s effort was full of merit as they again played with 14 players.

Best- Sienna Bloor, Michaela Perceval, Sally Ormond, Regan and Roslin Smith

Goals: Sienna Bloor and Brittany Ormond.

On Saturday, the girls host Belconnen, who forfeited to the Riverina Lions last Saturday.
