Bill advocating for Galong and drawing attention to the long grass in Limestone Park in 2016. Council is yet to complete a fence which has been slated for months near the Galong playground. Bill McCaskill has closed the doors on the Galong Post Office, some 7 years after he commenced business in the village. Bill and his wife Sharon moved from Canberra and chose Galong and the district, because it was an area they were familiar with.

After a long career in the Public Service a tree change was just what was needed. Bill said, “I knew the area and I came here and I found a good spot.” Bill and Sharon re-opened the doors on the post office and continued to serve the community, something Bill said he has enjoyed over the last few years. Bill won’t be going into retirement and will be looking for work in the near future. The Post Office just became unviable.

Bill said, “We hung out as long as we could. The business wasn’t viable to continue any longer. The best thing was getting to know everybody and the contact with customers. Meeting people in the area.” Whether it was a Mrs Macs Pie, a newspaper or something for the cupboard, the Post Office had a lot of different items for a small shop. Whilst residing in Galong, Sharon worked at the Kruger Medical Centre and Mercy Care as well as at Mt. St. Josephs in Young.

Bill and Sharon won’t be going anywhere, their block is called ‘Dunmovin’. They will continue to be a part of the Galong community and the wider community as they have been for the last 7 years. Bill spent time as the Galong Progress Association President and as a member of the Sibelco VPA committee.

He has also taken an interest in local government and often keeps up to dates with the goings on at Council. When in Harden, he has been a big part of the Men’s Shed in East Street. He isnt’ particularly impressed with Council’s current regard for Galong. He said, “It would be nice if the Council took the VPA committee and the village seriously.” Best of luck Bill and Sharon.
