Maurie Hyles, Monty Hyles, Sam Manwaring and Samuel Elphick will be hoping to go one better in 2019 after placing second in the 50 metre Freestyle Relay at Homebush this week. The Jugiong Public School students have been training hard for months. The JPS Super Fish will be heading back to the big smoke this week to attempt to go one better and win the state title in their chosen event.
9 year old Sam said, “I will be swimming in the Earle McGee Relay, we got silver last year, I think we will will go better this year.” Maurie, 11, said, “Our parents have been taking us to Coota to train and our parents are taking turns taking us over to the heated pool. I am 2 seconds quicker than last year.” Monty, 11, swims the final leg for the team and is down to a PB of about 37. He said, “I like Freestyle and Butterfly.” About 50 minutes separated the birth of the Hyles boys and their natural competitive behaviour appears to rub off on Sam and Samuel. Samuel said, “Relay is a team sport and we play other sports together.” The boys head in different directions heading up the hill to Harden for League, Yass and Coota for Rugby and Gundagai. It is a mammoth effort for a school with 19 students. The lads are coached by their parents and enjoy an ice cream after every training session, training twice a week to improve their times. Maurie and Monty will complete year 6 this year and it is hoped the next age group will come through and keep the relay team at the forefront of the sport. The boys hope to win on Friday and attend Nationals in the next stage of their swimming careers.
