The most familiar sight for opposition players is the back of Georgia Smith’s jumper. The Hawks put a kick through and bamboozle their opponents during their 70-0 win.
The Hawkettes were clearly too good for ADFA claiming a 78-0 win. The Smith family scored a combined total of 6 tries and were ably assisted by Tara McGrath-West, Emma James and Kate Menz, and Jess Doolan. James kicked 11 from 14 and had a very good day with the boot. The second half of the George Tooke Rugby League Shield began naturally as a carbon copy of the first, with HARDEN HAWKS facing a bye.This week it was into the competition proper with us up against the Australian Defence Force Acadamy ( ADFA ), at McLean Oval. The match kicked off at 3.20 pm or as the military put it 15.20 hrs.
The ARMY, NAVY, AIRFORCE personal are all young men, made up mainly of Army, with a sprinkling of the Navy and Airforce, all decked out in the colours of Red, White and Blue. Originally the Acadamy was first established back in 1968, in Canberra. The weather last Saturday was in stark contrast to when the Hawks last played ADFA. Remember in April our twin towns had a red plume haze hanging over it of dust and it wasn’t from a smoke bomb, tossed by the Army. On Saturday last we were greeted with possibly the biggest frost so far this winter, – 4. However, come mid-day all was in readiness for the match against the Defence Force in brilliant sunshine. ADFA’s troops came in from the south side kicking off towards Harden Hawks.
Accepting the leather (or should, that be synthetic) the Hawks brought the ball back up to half way before putting their foot to it trapping ADFA deep in their own territory. The Defence men did likewise with their set of six tackles, When the Hawks obtained possession they marched forward, resulting in Pat Smith crossing, at the hill area for a good try. Nathan Schofield’s conversion making it 6-0. There was a delay for a few minutes due to a leg injury to one of the wounded Soldiers. Two rucks later Pat Smith dived over for his second try, 12-0 to Harden. Following suit, our dashing centre Jono Pouono cut through and the score jumped to 18-nil. A Hawk’s backline was great to watch and on the end of it Ben Davis touched down 24-0. With 14 minutes left in the first half, Brent Shoard raced clear running 50 metres downfield, but his final pass went astray.
Then came the try of the day when Jake Hogan charged along the sideline before passing to Nathan Schofield who had backed up to score beside the posts. And when Sam Davis added another 4 pointer it was HAWKS 30 ADFA 0, and HALF TIME. It was obvious that the match between Our HARDEN HAWKS and the DEFENCE FORCE men was very one-sided . The Second half was to proceed in the same manner. ADFA didn’t surrender but fought on gamely and were completely outclassed on the day. Pat Smith’s three tries and Nathan Schofield’s eleven out of 12 goals stood out. Final Score was 70-0. Harden travel to BUNGENDORE’S Mick Sherd Oval next Saturday.
