The culmination of 2 big weekends at Harden Country Club came to an end on Saturday May 26 with the crowning of our new 4BBB Champions. Kevin Hoppe and Ron Page have put in a big day (moving day) to overcome a 6 shot deficit on the Round 1 Leaders Matt Peisley and John Brownhill, to post a 1 shot win over Bernie Parker & Ian Bruce. I recall some wise words last weekend about Golf being a funny game. When you think you have got it all in the bag, do not look back because someone may be passing you.

Poor old Matt & John after their emphatic round 1 score, could not hit a barn with a bag of wheat on Day 2, ultimately finishing 4 shots back of our Champions. Likewise our Round 1 2nd place getters Ian and Bernie could not put the accelerator down far enough to overcome the fast finishing Ron and Kevin. Our Round 2 Results saw overall winners Ron & Kevin post a Round 2 score of 47 points which when coupled with their round 1 of 41 points led to a victorious total of 88 points. Runners up on Day 2 were Rick Preston and Maurice Manwaring with 45 points but they were unable to combine on Day 1leaving them tied for 3rd overall. Bernie and Ian put together 45 and 42 to miss by 1 shot with their 87 total. Individual winner on Day 2 went to Rick Preston whose 41 points went a long way to their team total. Ron Page had already claimed the bigger silverware with his 43 points, simply wrecking the Daily Scratch Rating for everyone’s handicaps on Golflink. Nearest the Pin on the Bendigo Bank Hole in One hole was Ashley Hall who was a long way distant but got the ball at 7.8m. Our Day 2 sponsors Eric Kuhn and Herb Manwaring were thanked by Captain Craig on the day for their continued support of Harden Golf.

HERBY BLASTS THE PACK MIDWEEK With winter approaching rapidly, one might expect that the recent lower score wins would settle us in to a tough and gritty comp each midweek. Well then comes along Herby Manwaring to spoil the party. Not happy to sneak past his opposition by a little bit, Herby tears into the course and his handicap and he beats them by 8 whole shots over 12 holes on the 34 stableford point layout. Yes you heard it here, Herby recorded a 32 point round, and the handicapper has sliced and diced his handicap back to a far more challenging 9 after this week. 3 whole shots back and in a semi-normal range was Garth Webb who took second with 29 points (5 better than handicap), whilst 3rd went to Ron Fuller on 28 points. Peter Steinke also beat his handicap with 27 points. There were 24 players and no mention of the random ball sweepstakes winner from our foreign midweek correspondent.

PENNANTS DEFENCE A ROCKY ONE Last Sunday our 2017 victorious team headed to Gundagai to defend a back-to-back effort to try and hold the SWDGA Handicap Matchplay Pennants Title. Our boys played Gundagai at home on a much improved track from recent years. The Greens were in exceptional shape but the mighty Murrumbidgee was in even better form if you listen to pennants Captain Craig who donated 7 to the Water Gods in his round. Our boys went down 4 matches to 1, with only Chris the Bear Hocking being victorious. Those in the car going home described their ears as bleeding from Hock’s stern lectures and ambitious boasts upon arrival back at our headquarters.

I wish everyone well at their flogging endeavours. Alby
