The Devils are on a roll with a dominant performance against Grenfell on Saturday at Robert’s Park. Jack O’Connor, Ben Lenehan (scoring a try) and Shahid Khalfan again proved to be strong for their opposition, whilst the tight five put it over the Grenfell pack across the field.

The Harden Devils hosted the Grenfell Panthers for the first game of the second round last Saturday at Roberts Park. Grenfell brought a full squad but did have injuries to several key players. Their thoughts of revenge were quickly put aside as the Devils threw the ball around and put on two quick tries, both to Ben Lenehan, giving the Devils a 14-0 lead early. The possession evened out through the first half but the class of the Devils’ back line shone as they were able to post three more tries and go into half time leading 31-0. The somewhat stunned Panthers reverted to a spoiling and sometimes spiteful style of play that boiled over once and threatened to boil over a few more times.

The second half featured quite a few penalties as the referee struggled to keep on top of the play. Grenfell managed to draw Harden into playing more in the forwards and both packs competed strongly for dominance. The Devils were camped on Grenfell’s line for what appeared to be ages and it took some time to breach it. Tries to Adam Walsh and Jack Quinn came from sustained forward pressure. The final score of 48-0 also included two tries to debutante Rory Bolger, one each to James Wallis and Joshua Quinn.

Coach Adam Walsh was very happy with the result. “The forwards really matched them this time, especially the tight five and they didn’t like it. Last time we played them they touched up our scrum but not today. The lineouts still need a bit of work though I’m not sure Sachs has a straight lineout throw in him. The backs were excellent again today but we have come to expect that. The most enjoyable part of the game was keeping them scoreless and watching Flanery get bashed twice. Our try line defence was desperate and a big improvement on the last game.” The three points went to Clint Stevens who had another solid game and managed to break up a fight.

Two points to Shahid Khalfan who controlled the attack well and put heaps of pressure on Grenfell’s backline. One point to Fergus Hall who is slowly starting to learn the rules. The next game is against Cootamundra on the 16th June.

The game is being played at Wallendbeen oval. There will be an Old Boys game between Harden and Cootamundra at 2:00 pm and presentations back at the Wallendbeen Pub (coldest beer on the island) after the main game. AH
