The Twin Town Times only last week ran a story on the state of the Barton Highway and the need to duplicate the road for the safety of its users. Unfortunately the day after our story went to print, 2 people were killed and the road was closed in both directions following a crash where another 6 were taken to hospital.
A 34-year-old woman and a 36-year-old woman from the ACT were killed at the scene when the car they were in collided head-on with another near Wallaroo, shortly before 8:00am on Friday May 25. A third car was also hit in the crash, but the other people involved, including a teenager, two children and a baby, were unharmed. Significant traffic delays continued until after midday.
The drivers of both cars were subject to mandatory testing after the incident. The Barton is a federally-funded highway, which means it requires a 80-20 federal-state funding split, and an agreement must be reached if progress is to be made. With the Coalition having held power in both NSW and federally since 2013, it’s hard to believe an agreement was unable to be reached before now.
A final costing on the road and a State Government committed needs to happen for this project to have a chance of going ahead. If the State provides their money up front then residents need to apply pressure federally. Residents can’t be expected to battle two tiers of government, common sense must prevail.
