Andrew Kennett is helping out local Rugby by becoming a qualified senior referee.
Andrew Kennett has put his hand up to do a thankless, yet much- needed job for local Rugby. He said, “It’s hard work out there, it’s challenging without a doubt.” Andrew has been refereeing juniors for a number of years and decided to take the step and get his ticket to do seniors.
The Devils approached Andrew to assist with game day officiating and he has had to do further training which includes an online course with 4 modules which he has completed. “It’s not that hard, it just takes a bit of time and then I will get ticked off.” Andrew made it clear to both sides in his first match earlier this year at Robert’s Park to ‘go easy on him’. He joked, “Some of them interpreted that as give me as much as they can.” He said Adam Walsh was unusually well-behaved in his first match. Andrew said, “I’m a 53 model, I had a game in my late forties, but it is a good way to keep involved and stay fit. It’s great to see the younger players coming through.”
He said the best thing to come out of his refereeing is making contact with the players. “I played with their fathers.” Volunteers like Andrew have helped allow Rugby’s resurgence in the Twin Towns. The Devils are shaping up as serious title contenders this season and may claim their first premiership since 2006. The Devils will be taking on the Cootamundra Tri-colours this Saturday at Wallendbeen at 3:15pm. President Harry Sachs said, “A vote amongst the team was taken and we have all agreed that it’s time for our coach to retire from playing. He’s too much of a liability and is taking up space for our star winger Corey Pearsell on the bench.” No doubt Coach Walsh will continue on, guiding the Devils and pilfering firewood.
